Problem or need statement:
The problems are
- 80% of Liberians live below the poverty line on less then $ 1 per day (World fact book). These parents can’t afford to provide the necessary essentials to go to school (i.e, food, clothes, transportation & school materials)
- Psychology these parents & children are traumatized from the war, may children replaced their books with guns as they joined the various armed groups roaming the country, according to UNICEF
- Majority of the parents are illiterate and don’t see the importance of an education
- Classrooms are dilapidated, and under furnished. Here’s what an article in IRINnews.org had to say, “Liberian youths are packing Liberian’s public primary under a free, compulsory education programme, but the country’s beleaguered, post-war school system can barely keep up with desks, books and other supplies. At the cost of about $5, children purchased and then brought their desks with them when they enrolled”.
